[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] On the 29th, Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, announced that he received the ‘Excellent Local Government Mayor Award for Urban Regeneration’ at the ‘7th Metropolitan Urban Regeneration Governance Forum’ hosted by the Urban Regeneration Governance Forum Corporation.
Mayor Im was recognized for his contributions to urban regeneration New Deal through urban development and redevelopment in Dong-gu, where the phenomenon of downtown hollowing is prominent, as well as for revitalizing resident communities and the social economy.
As part of the urban regeneration leading area project, the three major urban regeneration hub facilities?Pureun Village Community Center, Gung-dong Maze Center, and Chungjang 22?which recently opened one after another, have established themselves as successful models of people-centered urban regeneration.
In addition, Dongmyeong-dong’s ‘Making Dongmyeong Village Where Culture Becomes Light Project (20 billion KRW)’ in 2018, Seonam-dong’s ‘Together for a New Leap! Seonam-dong Printing Culture Village Creation Project (30 billion KRW)’ in 2019, and Sansu-dong’s ‘Kkodume Fragrant Happy Village Creation Project (5 billion KRW)’ in 2020 were selected, accelerating urban regeneration New Deal projects aimed at improving aging residential environments, creating village jobs, and restoring resident-led communities.
Mayor Im Taek of Dong-gu said, “I am pleased that the achievements of resident-centered urban regeneration projects, such as the creation of the three major hub facilities, have been recognized,” and added, “We will continue to create a Dong-gu that people want to visit through people-centered urban regeneration projects that leverage the characteristics of Dong-gu.”
