[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Shin Chunsu, CEO of the performance planning company Odi Company, received the Prime Minister's Award at the Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards.
At the 2020 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards ceremony, CEO Shin Chunsu became the first domestic musical producer to receive the Prime Minister's Award. CEO Shin produced numerous musicals newly interpreting original works to resonate with Korean audiences through Korean productions, presenting high-quality stages that led the development and popularization of the domestic musical market. He was recognized for his contribution to promoting the excellence of Korean musicals worldwide and advancing the Korean performance industry.
CEO Shin founded Odi Company in 2001 and produced musicals such as "Jekyll & Hyde," "Man of La Mancha," "Sweeney Todd," "Dracula," and "Doctor Zhivago."
Now in its 11th year, the Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards is a ceremony established to boost the pride of popular culture and arts figures and enhance the social status of the popular culture and arts industry. It is the highest government award in the field of popular culture and arts. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted based on various criteria including the period of public service, domestic and international activity records and achievements, contributions to related industries, social contributions, social reputation, and recognition, awarding a total of 29 individuals (teams) with the Popular Culture and Arts Award.
Producer Shin Chunsu said, "I am very happy and honored to receive this meaningful award. Being here was possible thanks to the actors and staff who worked on stage together and the Odi Company team members. Many actors have not even had the chance to perform on stage due to COVID-19, and although the situation is difficult, musical artists are working hard to continue presenting performances with good energy. I hope many audiences will show interest. I hope musicals can come closer to the public."
CEO Shin is the first Korean full member of the "Broadway League" and has participated as a producer in numerous Broadway musicals such as "Holler If Ya Hear Me," "Doctor Zhivago," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "The Story of My Life," "Jekyll & Hyde," and "Dreamgirls." He successfully led the entry of the replica production of the musical "Jekyll & Hyde" into the Chinese market. Recently, with the aim of lowering the threshold for the public to watch musicals and providing various information related to the works, he launched a new content platform "OD Say" on Odi Company's official YouTube channel, actively attempting communication with the public.
