[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Ju-hyung] Lee Nak-yeon, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced the party's nomination policy regarding the Seoul and Busan mayoral by-elections scheduled for April next year, stating, "I have come to believe that receiving the judgment of citizens through candidate nominations is a responsible duty."
On the 29th, Lee said at a party members' meeting, "This morning, with the consent of the Supreme Council members, we decided to put to a vote among all party members whether to amend the party constitution to open the way for candidate recommendations."
He explained, "The party constitution clearly states that if a by-election is held due to the loss of position caused by serious misconduct such as corruption by an elected official belonging to the party, no candidate will be recommended for the relevant electoral district," adding, "According to the party constitution, it is difficult for our party to field candidates in the two by-elections."
