[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seul-gi] In Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, a man in his 70s who was delivering newspapers was fatally struck by a car driven by a heavily intoxicated man in his 20s.
At around 1 a.m. on the 28th, an Infiniti passenger car driven by A (22) collided with a motorcycle ahead on a one-way 4-lane road in Hadaewon-dong, Jungwon-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province.
As a result of the accident, the motorcycle driver B (70) was taken to the hospital but ultimately passed away, and the vehicle overturned from the impact, injuring A as well.
According to CCTV footage of the accident released by SBS, the passenger car driven by A was speeding and failed to reduce speed, crashing into the motorcycle and even hitting the median strip flower bed.
An eyewitness told SBS in an interview, "The accident scene was huge, chaotic, and complicated. I heard the drunk driver saying at the scene that he was feeling sick and that he needed to go to the hospital himself."
B was reportedly delivering newspapers on his motorcycle when the accident occurred. A colleague of B told SBS, "Since he was just staying at home, he came out to the agency to do some side work and earn some pocket money."
According to the police investigation, A’s blood alcohol concentration was at a level warranting license cancellation.
The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant after A completes hospital treatment for his minor injuries.
