The winning work 'Gochibi' is a Jeju dialect term meaning the Go family... The fact that the business owner from Jeju Island painstakingly attached each basalt piece to create the stone signboard leaves a deep impression
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will select harmonious and elegant signboards that have contributed to improving the urban landscape in the area and hold the '2020 Jongno-gu Good Signboard Exhibition' from October 27 to November 20.
In May and June, the district conducted a 'Good Signboard Contest' to enhance residents' pride, secure Jongno's identity, and establish a high-quality outdoor advertising culture.
This year, a total of 25 signboard works recommended by community centers, business owners, and signboard designers were submitted, and after a selection committee review, seven final award-winning works were carefully chosen.
As a result, the grand prize this year went to ‘Gochibi’, the excellence award to ‘SeoulSeoulSeoul 1896’, and the merit awards to ‘Seochon Geu Chaekbang’ and ‘Sojeokdu’.
Following these, ‘Hoho Sikdang’, ‘Sosohan Punggyeong’, and ‘Dongyang Tteokjip’ received special awards.
The grand prize winner ‘Gochibi’ is a Jeju dialect term meaning the Go family. It is said that the judges were deeply impressed by the stone signboard made by the business owner, who is from Jeju, by attaching each piece of basalt stone.
Accordingly, Jongno-gu held an awards ceremony on the 27th, presenting the winners with commemorative frames containing photos of their signboards along with certificates of appreciation. Additionally, a traveling exhibition will be held at the main building of the district office and the Jongno Promotion Center from the 27th until the 20th of next month.
The excellent works of this year’s good signboards are also posted on the Jongno-gu district office website, allowing anyone to appreciate them online.
Meanwhile, in this year’s Seoul City Good Signboard Contest, among a total of 11 award-winning works, three were awarded to businesses located in Jongno-gu. These are ‘Kkotbanji Geumbang’ which won the excellence award, and ‘Ossi Somssi’ and ‘Cha Masineun Tteul’ which received special awards. This achievement, following last year, is the highest number of awards ever among the 25 autonomous districts, proving that Jongno-gu is leading the way in revitalizing local characteristics and transforming street atmospheres through signboards.
In addition, Jongno-gu is conducting a comprehensive cleanup of ‘old and ownerless outdoor advertisements’ that have been left unattended for a long time due to business closures or relocations until December this year to prevent the proliferation of advertisements and create a pleasant street environment. This is to prevent accidents caused by falling old signboards in advance and to provide residents with a safe walking environment.
District Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “Good signboards reflect not only the street atmosphere and the history and culture of the area but also the emotions of the residents living there,” adding, “We plan to continuously discover beautiful and unique signboards and actively promote them. We hope this will help raise local residents’ pride and make Jongno a place where walking is enjoyable.”
