Received a total of 1 billion KRW in startup project funds over 3 years to create safe alleys... New sidewalks installed, speed enforcement CCTV set up, and sloped alley improvements underway
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) announced that the area around Kkachisan-ro 4-gil in Hwagokbon-dong was selected for the ‘2020 Second Half Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Contest Project’ hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
The Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project is a small-scale, field-oriented regeneration project conducted at the alleyway level, unlike the existing urban regeneration projects targeting large areas.
A total of 15 autonomous districts and 18 project sites applied for this contest project. Among them, after on-site inspections by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and comprehensive evaluations by the judging committee, 15 sites including the area around Kkachisan-ro 4-gil in Hwagokbon-dong, Gangseo-gu were selected as project sites.
The selected area around Kkachisan-ro 4-gil in Hwagokbon-dong is an aging low-rise residential area with a high need for alleyway regeneration.
In particular, the area has many steep and winding alleyways and an elementary school is located there, making it an area where improving the pedestrian environment for the safety of residents and students is urgently needed.
The district challenged the alleyway regeneration contest project focusing on creating safe alleyways based on discovering local agendas through continuous communication with local residents, achieving this result.
As a result, the Hwagokbon-dong area will receive a total of 1 billion KRW in seed funding from the Seoul Metropolitan Government over the next three years to promote the alleyway regeneration project.
The main project contents include ▲ establishing safe school routes such as new sidewalks and installation of speed enforcement CCTV ▲ improvement of steep alleys, reorganization of sewage pipelines, and maintenance of infrastructure and streets ▲ installation of resident convenience facilities such as electric Ddareungi bikes and smart libraries, and creation of alleyways with specialized designs ▲ activation of alleyway communities such as operating safe school route guardians and shared resident parking.
The district plans to complete the execution plan by next year by collecting opinions from residents in the Hwagokbon-dong area and will actively promote the alleyway regeneration project.
Mayor Noh Hyun-song said, “With the selection of this alleyway regeneration project, the deteriorated alleyway environment will be improved to be safe and pleasant, and the resident community centered around the alleyways is expected to be revitalized. We will work together with residents to ensure the successful promotion of the alleyway regeneration project.”
Meanwhile, as part of various efforts to promote urban regeneration, last year Hwagok 8-dong and Hwagokbon-dong were selected as final targets for the alleyway regeneration project, and the area around Gonghang-dong was selected as a Seoul urban regeneration activation area. This year, Hwagok Jungang Alley Market was selected as a pilot project site for urban regeneration linked to traditional markets, achieving notable results.
