[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Uplus has partnered with the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), a national ICT intelligence comprehensive research institute, to strengthen the security of 5th generation (5G) mobile communication networks.

On the 29th, LG Uplus announced that it signed a mutual cooperation agreement with ETRI on edge computing security including the 5G equipment supply chain, as well as next-generation mobile communication and convergence service technologies.

The two parties plan to prioritize "security technology" as the main area of cooperation and expand collaboration to communication technology, fundamental source technology, and convergence service technology. In the field of security technology, a working-level council will be formed to focus on hardware security verification and evaluation of 5G server systems and network equipment, security status analysis of cloud edge networks (MEC), and the development of edge security technologies for threat detection and response.

In the fields of communication technology and fundamental source technology, they will join forces to develop 5G and 6G wireless transmission, mobile core networking technology, wired and wireless quantum communication, and cryptographic technologies. In the convergence service technology field, they will jointly develop next-generation technologies such as 5G convergence service technology, visual intelligence source technology, autonomous driving, intelligent robots, smart factories, artificial intelligence (AI) vaccines, and SDN/NFV-based intelligent security services.

Hyun-ho Hah, Vice Chairman of LG Uplus, said, "LG Uplus’s 5G network applies a world-class international standard-based security framework and continuously inspects and manages it to preemptively block security threats." He added, "With this agreement as an opportunity, let us jointly realize enhanced 5G security and cutting-edge future communication technologies and services based on 5G."

Kim Myung-jun, President of ETRI, said, "This agreement will serve as a starting point for mutual cooperation in the fields of 5G communication security technology, communication technology, fundamental source technology, and convergence service technology." He added, "I hope it will become a model for changes in the research approach of government-funded research institutes through closer consultations among researchers for more practical cooperation."
