Following Chorokmaeul in Hwikyung-dong, exterior wall painting and security light installation can improve residential environment while preserving alleyway character
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) announced that the area around Jegi-ro 11-gil has been selected for the Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project in the second half of 2020.
The Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project is a small-scale regeneration initiative targeting alleyways approximately 500 meters in length, aiming to improve residential environments while preserving the unique character of the area.
The Jegi-ro 11-gil area selected in this project is characterized by a large number of long-term local residents who have lived there since the 1960s. Unlike the adjacent areas designated as urban regeneration New Deal sites and residential environment improvement districts, such as Gamcho Village in Jegi-dong and Godea-mae Village, this area lacks an established urban plan.
The district plans to invest a total of 1.1 billion KRW, including 1 billion KRW from the city and 100 million KRW from the district by 2022, to transform Jegi-ro 11-gil into a romantic, walkable alleyway through measures such as exterior wall painting, installation of LED security lights, pavement block repaving, creation of a residents' rest area connected to Jeongneung Stream, and landscaping improvements.
Additionally, the district intends to promote a sustainable, community-based urban regeneration project by creating a youth hub space utilizing vacant houses and linking with adjacent urban regeneration project sites.
Earlier this year, Chorok Village in Hwikyung-dong was selected for the Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project, where the district plans to create alleyway rest areas through the installation of handrails, creation of painted benches, and fence farming. The district secured 550 million KRW through the previous competition and has requested an additional 500 million KRW from the city while commissioning basic services.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Following Chorok Village in Hwikyung-dong, the selection of Jegi-dong for the alleyway regeneration project allows us to preserve the identity of aging alleyways while improving the pedestrian environment. Through this regeneration project, we will do our best to enhance residents' convenience and help Hwikyung-dong and Jegi-dong become leading areas in small-scale urban regeneration.”
