[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Major foreign media reported that the United States announced on the 28th (local time) that it does not support the Nigerian candidate in the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General preference survey.
On the same day at 3 p.m., during a meeting held at the WTO headquarters, the United States stated that it does not support Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria's candidate, as the next WTO Director-General.
Earlier, the U.S. political media outlet Politico reported that the United States sent a cable to embassies worldwide to identify which candidate each host country supports for the WTO Director-General position.
At 11 a.m. that day, the WTO summoned the ambassadors of Korea and Nigeria in Geneva and informed them that Ngozi, who was the competitor of Yoo Myung-hee, the head of the Trade Negotiations Division at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, was leading in the next Director-General preference survey.
