Discussion on New Deal Projects in Rural Areas
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The "National Touring Roundtable Conference" for a people- and environment-centered agricultural policy transition was held on the 28th through multi-channel live broadcasts both online and offline.
According to Jeonnam Province, the event, co-hosted by the Presidential Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Affairs and the Korea Council of Governors, was conducted via multi-channel live broadcasts from three cities and provinces: Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, and Sejong. The main studio was set up in the Wangin Room at the Jeonnam Provincial Office.
The event was attended by about 100 people, including Jeong Hyun-chan, chairman of the Agricultural Special Committee, Kim Young-rok, governor of Jeonnam Province, agricultural and fishery producers, food-related organization officials, experts, and public officials, divided into groups of 30 to 40 at each regional conference venue.
There were passionate presentations and discussions over three hours on the "New Deal Tasks in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Areas" and the "National Food Comprehensive Strategy."
In particular, participants in the discussion openly expressed candid opinions and proposed various ideas for a major agricultural policy transition in response to the climate crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was evaluated as a place where the will of the people was gathered and the power of collective intelligence was confirmed.
Chairman Jeong Hyun-chan said, "The farmers' aspirations and public participation hoping for an agricultural policy that can respond to the climate crisis and food security seem unstoppable even by COVID-19," adding, "Please gather wisdom so that policies such as the Green New Deal and the National Food Comprehensive Strategy can create sustainable agriculture and fisheries and protect the people's basic right to food."
Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeonnam Province stated, "Jeonnam Province, as the number one region for eco-friendly agriculture and the largest and best fishery resource base in the country, feels a heavy responsibility to lead the New Deal and food policies as a representative agricultural and fishery production area of Korea," and added, "We believe that a new path for Korea's agriculture, fisheries, and rural areas will open through this event, and Jeonnam Province will take the lead in continuous development and creating prosperous rural communities."
Meanwhile, after completing the national touring schedule, the Agricultural Special Committee plans to submit the results report and internal evaluation in November to the plenary session for resolution. A roundtable conference report meeting and the National Food Comprehensive Strategy proclamation ceremony are planned for the first quarter of next year. Additionally, activities to revise related laws and systems will be continuously promoted.
