[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jung] It has been reported that the Donald Trump administration appointed individuals who deny the seriousness of climate change to government agencies that study meteorological phenomena.
On the 27th (local time), The New York Times (NYT) reported this and predicted that if President Trump succeeds in his re-election, attempts to seize control of national research institutions will intensify.
According to the NYT, the Trump administration recently replaced the chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and created a new position of 'Deputy Undersecretary.' NOAA, a research agency under the Department of Commerce, actively warns on its website about the risks of climate change caused by human activities based on independent research.
The newly appointed individuals tend to deny the seriousness of climate change. Ryan Maue, the new chief scientist, is a former researcher at the conservative think tank Cato Institute. He has criticized scientists for exaggerating the risks of climate change. Michael Regan, a professor at the University of Delaware appointed as the new Deputy Undersecretary, has also expressed a negative stance toward the academic consensus that human activities cause climate change.
