[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Kim Seongjong) appointed sign language interpreters on the 28th to provide information related to Coast Guard duties to people with speech and hearing disabilities.
The appointed sign language interpreters are three individuals affiliated with the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sign Language Interpretation Center: Bae Uri (38, female), Lee Seonhee (27, female), and Won Jonghwa (44, male).
People with speech and hearing disabilities have had difficulties accessing information about socially significant incidents and accidents occurring at sea. Additionally, they faced challenges in accurately understanding details during investigations of such incidents and accidents. Therefore, the interpreters were appointed to prevent and protect against human rights violations through sign language interpretation.
They will engage in activities for the next three years to provide information about Coast Guard duties and to promote human rights protection.
A Jeju Coast Guard official stated, “Since they perform the mission of delivering information to marginalized groups, we expect that the sign language interpreters will greatly contribute to human rights protection.”
