[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] LG Electronics announced on the 28th that it will jointly develop core technologies related to domestic manufacturing equipment with the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, a government-funded research institute.

LG Electronics and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials will sign a memorandum of understanding for the development of core technologies in materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) at LG Electronics' Production Technology Center located in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do.

The main areas of joint development include ▲ robots and lasers, in which LG Electronics has accumulated technological expertise, and ▲ roll-to-roll technology (a method of manufacturing electronic devices on rotating rolls wound with thin materials such as flexible plastic or metal foil), which has been researched by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials.

Going forward, both parties will hold technology exchange meetings twice a year to jointly discover research projects and share results. Based on the research outcomes, they will also promote international standardization together.
