[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), expressed gratitude for the Korean government's collaboration, stating that South Korea's response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) demonstrated that the COVID-19 pandemic can be effectively controlled.
On the 27th (local time), Director-General Ghebreyesus posted on his Twitter in Korean, "South Korea's response has shown that solidarity and adherence to proven public health measures can effectively control the COVID-19 pandemic," adding, "I deeply thank President Moon Jae-in's leadership and the collaboration of Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and Minister of Health and Welfare Park Neung-hoo."
Along with this post, Director-General Ghebreyesus shared a 4-minute and 20-second video. The video included English interviews with Minister Kang and Minister Park, introduced COVID-19 prevention measures such as drive-through testing, the resulting trends, and key focus areas of the Korean government during the COVID-19 crisis.
In this video, WHO evaluated, "South Korea focused on building essential 'trust' for a successful balance between COVID-19 prevention and maintaining social openness, along with 'testing, tracing, and treatment.'"
This is not the first time Director-General Ghebreyesus mentioned South Korea's COVID-19 response on his Twitter. On the 3rd of last month, he also expressed gratitude for BTS emphasizing the importance of wearing masks, calling them a "global role model" for promoting mask-wearing to prevent COVID-19. He also emphasized, "Let's follow the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 artist. Wear a mask over your nose. Fighting!"
