Gwangju Nam-gu Selected as Pilot Institution for 'Online Passport Reissuance Service'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) has been selected as a pilot institution for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' government innovation project, the 'Online Passport Reissuance Application Service,' and will officially launch the passport reissuance service through online applications starting from the 29th.

According to Nam-gu on the 28th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs selected 55 local governments, including Nam-gu, as pilot institutions among 240 local governments nationwide that handle passport affairs, to expand the online passport reissuance application service to all domestic and overseas passport agencies and diplomatic missions. Nam-gu is the only autonomous district in Gwangju to be selected.

Accordingly, Nam-gu will officially provide the online passport reissuance application service starting from the 29th.

Applicants eligible for the service are any citizens who have previously been issued an electronic passport at least once. Minors under 18 years old, first-time electronic passport applicants, diplomatic, official, and emergency passport applicants, and those who have not completed military service are excluded from eligibility.

The service application can be accessed through the Government24 website domestically and through the Consular Civil Service 24 website overseas.

When applying for passport reissuance online within the country, an SMS message with issuance guidance is sent to the applicant's mobile phone, and overseas applicants receive issuance guidance messages via email.

However, to use this service, applicants must have a public certificate in their own name. If the photo file does not meet the passport photo specifications, the application may not be processed or the reissuance request may be rejected.

Additionally, the passport must be collected in person, and the applicant can select the preferred collection agency at the time of application. After the application is completed, the collection agency cannot be changed.

A Nam-gu official stated, "Applying for passport reissuance online from home or office saves time and reduces the inconvenience of visiting the civil service window twice," and encouraged active use of the online passport reissuance application service.
