[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 28th, the People’s Party harshly criticized President Moon Jae-in’s speech explaining next year’s budget proposal, calling it a “textbook example of self-praise” and a “speech with zero sincerity.”

People’s Party spokesperson Ahn Hye-jin said in a statement that day, “Watching the ruling party holding a feast for themselves almost brought tears to my eyes out of sadness for the people and concern for the country’s future.”

Spokesperson Ahn pointed out, “President Moon’s speech may have succeeded in protecting and regrouping certain progressive factions, but it reminded us that dreaming again of a country where the people are the owners, a fair and just nation the people long for, and a country filled with public officials armed with a sense of duty who are ashamed of lies and willing to dedicate themselves to the nation is nothing but a mere fantasy.”

Ahn said, “The conclusion is that the president cannot even judge what the people want or worry about,” and sharpened her criticism by adding, “Just looking at the president’s emphasis on the success in quarantine and the economy shows how much the current administration is immersed only in the stories they want to hear.”

She criticized, “It is not yet the stage to discuss the success of quarantine. The people still feel trapped in the dark tunnel of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), living in tension, and the economy is more stagnant than ever. The situation is so critical that cries of ‘I can’t take it anymore’ rise like pillars of fire to the sky. Yet, as the person ultimately responsible for state affairs, the president showed no accurate understanding of the current situation nor any determination to overcome it.”

Ahn added, “Even if ideals and tendencies differ, in these times when a leader who listens attentively to voices different from those of comrades on their side and achieves cooperation beyond mere words is desperately needed, there was no will to achieve this.”

She concluded, “Even now, the president must not become an emotional king who smiles leisurely, intoxicated by the performances of arrogant swordsmen dancing with knives, clowns full of lies, and showmen blinded by the desire to extend their rule and obsessed with winning public favor.”
