[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] It has been investigated that Chairman Lee Kun-hee of Samsung increased Samsung Group's assets by approximately 790 trillion won during his tenure.


On the 28th, CEO Score, a corporate evaluation site, surveyed changes in group assets and sales during the tenure of second and third-generation chairmen of the top 10 groups (based on 2019 fiscal year). The total assets increased by 713.8% (1,742 trillion won), and sales increased by 411.6% (865 trillion won).


Samsung's assets increased by more than 790 trillion won during the late Chairman Lee's tenure (including his illness period), growing the company at the largest scale among the top 10 groups.


In 1987, the first year of Chairman Lee's inauguration, Samsung's assets were at the level of 10 trillion won, but by 2019, they had increased by 793 trillion won (7,620.3%) to 803 trillion won.


The number of affiliates also increased by 22, from 37 to 59.


Next, Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo of Hyundai Motor Group separated Hyundai Motor Group from Hyundai Group in 2000 and grew the group into one with assets increasing from 38 trillion won to 290 trillion won over about 20 years.


Chairman Kim Seung-yeon of Hanwha increased assets by a total of 206 trillion won since his inauguration in 1981 until last year, and Chairman Chey Tae-won of SK increased assets by 191 trillion won since his inauguration in 1998, following behind.


The late Chairman Koo Bon-moo of LG Group increased LG Group's assets from 28 trillion won in 1994, the year before his inauguration, to 123 trillion won in 2017, the year before his passing, an increase of 95 trillion won (339.7%).


Samsung also saw the largest increase in group sales. The late Chairman Lee Kun-hee increased sales from about 10 trillion won in his first year of inauguration to 315 trillion won last year, an increase of 305 trillion won (3,076.9%).


Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo increased sales by 149 trillion won, Chairman Chey Tae-won by 124 trillion won, Chairman Koo Bon-moo by 98 trillion won, Chairman Kim Seung-yeon by 57 trillion won, Chairman Chung Mong-joon by 39 trillion won, Honorary Chairman Huh Chang-soo by 39 trillion won, Chairwoman Lee Myung-hee by 26 trillion won, Chairman Lee Jae-hyun by 18 trillion won, and Chairman Shin Dong-bin by 10 trillion won, in that order.
