Over 86% of buildings in the Jongam 7 Redevelopment Cancellation Area are over 20 years old; Seoul City to invest 1 billion KRW over 3 years for alleyway regeneration on Jongam-ro 16-gil
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The Bukbawi Alley in Jongam-dong, around Jongam-ro 16-gil (Jongam-dong 9-31 area), Seongbuk-gu, has been selected as a project site for the 2020 Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Contest.
The Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project differs from the existing urban regeneration projects that target ‘areas’ such as urban regeneration activation zones by regenerating on a ‘line’ basis. It is a small-scale, field-oriented regeneration project focused on ‘lines’.
In the second half of this year’s contest, a total of 18 project sites from 15 autonomous districts applied. Seoul City selected the final 15 areas, including Bukbawi Alley in Jongam-dong, by evaluating the suitability of the project sites, the autonomous district’s implementation capabilities, and resident-led promotion capabilities through rigorous on-site inspections and expert reviews.
The area around Jongam-ro 16-gil in Seongbuk-gu is a zone where the Jongam 7 redevelopment was canceled, and 86% of the buildings are over 20 years old, accelerating aging. With a seed fund of 1 billion KRW supported by Seoul City over three years, the alleyway regeneration will be carried out by creating alley terraces utilizing the space beside walls and demolishing walls in dead-end alleys.
Lee Seung-ro, the district mayor, expressed, “The Jongam Bukbawi Alley regeneration project is a small-scale, field-oriented regeneration project that can effectively reflect the wishes of local residents. It is expected to enhance residents’ convenience through various SOC projects and revitalize the resident community.”
