Expansion of Children's Traffic Safety Infrastructure to Fulfill the 'School Zone Safety Facility Expansion' Pledge
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) is making every effort to create a safe walking environment for children, including installing the nation’s first ‘Real-time Right Turn Video Alert’ system.
The district has continuously expanded traffic safety facilities in school zones, aiming to fulfill its campaign promise of ‘Expanding School Zone Safety Facilities.’
They focused on the fact that 70% of accidents in school zones occur while crossing the road. Projects necessary for children’s traffic safety are being steadily implemented, such as ▲yellow carpets and yellow footprints ▲expansion of speed enforcement CCTV ▲solar-powered LED signs ▲ground-level pedestrian traffic lights ▲and expanded installation of runway-style crosswalks.
In particular, recently, the nation’s first ‘Real-time Right Turn Video Alert’ was installed at the intersection in front of Munhyeon Elementary School in Songpa-gu, receiving a warm welcome from residents.
The ‘Real-time Right Turn Video Alert’ uses video cameras and LED panels to display the crosswalk situation in real time.
It significantly increases drivers’ duty of care and minimizes blind spots created during right turns, greatly enhancing traffic accident prevention.
Additionally, it has various supplementary functions such as ▲real-time vehicle speed measurement ▲emoticon changes according to vehicle speed ▲and voice guidance warnings when vehicles approach, making it useful for both drivers and pedestrians.
Starting with this ‘Video Alert’ installation, the district plans to expand the facilities next year as well. They will focus on identifying areas with frequent right-turn accidents caused by landscaping, trees, and various facilities to establish a safe environment for residents.
On the 22nd, Songpa-gu Mayor Park Seong-su held a live talk concert titled ‘Songpa-daero’ at the outdoor garden of the Songpa Book Museum, where he conducted a real-time discussion on ‘Children’s Traffic Safety’ with Songpa residents.
Mayor Park Seong-su said, “Since the beginning of my term, I have deeply empathized with the importance of children’s traffic safety and have listened carefully to residents’ voices while making great efforts to establish related infrastructure. Going forward, I will continue to listen attentively to residents’ opinions and discover innovative ideas to do my best in creating a Songpa-gu free of children’s traffic accidents.”
