[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chonnam National University announced on the 27th that it ranked 2nd among domestic flagship national universities in the ‘Best Global Universities Ranking’ released by the U.S. current affairs magazine U.S. News & World Report.
U.S. News & World Report evaluated the university based on data from the past five years (2014?2018), using 13 weighted indicators including the university’s international and regional research reputation, publications, paper citations, number and proportion of top 1% and 10% papers, and proportion of international collaborative research papers.
Chonnam National University ranked 2nd among flagship national universities, 13th domestically, and 664th worldwide.
In particular, Chonnam National University achieved 174th worldwide in the ‘Regional Research Performance Reputation’ category, 356th worldwide in the ‘Research Publications’ category, and impressively rose 29 places from the previous year to 464th in the number of top 1% cited papers.
The world rankings by academic field were 201st in Agricultural Sciences, 229th in Energy and Fuels, 243rd in Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology, 319th in Plant and Animal Sciences, 324th in Materials Science, 347th in Biology and Biochemistry, 358th in Chemistry, 405th in Physics, 501st in Clinical Medicine, and 585th in Engineering.
The U.S. current affairs magazine U.S. News & World Report annually publishes rankings of up to 1,500 universities worldwide, focusing on academic research and reputation. A total of 41 domestic universities, including Chonnam National University, were included in the rankings.
This year’s evaluation covered 1,748 universities from 86 countries, a significant increase from 1,599 universities from 81 countries last year.
Chonnam National University President Jeong Byeongseok said, “We are maintaining a relatively stable ranking in an evaluation that measures the university’s research competitiveness. In addition to our ongoing efforts to strengthen research competitiveness, we will further expand institutional and organizational support to establish ourselves as a research-oriented university.”
