[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced on the 27th that a philanthropist recently decided to sponsor five families through the ‘100 Families Embrace Project,’ which has been promoted since 2011 to eliminate welfare blind spots.

At the sponsorship ceremony held last week at Seodaemun-gu Office, sponsor Kenneth Kang said, “I wanted to help families in need with children, and I thought it would be good to participate in donations through the ‘100 Families Embrace Project.”

Kang will support the ‘Family No. 581’ re-sponsorship family and the newly sponsored families No. 673 to 676 with 1 million KRW per month for one year, distributing 200,000 KRW to each family.

The families No. 673 and 674 have elementary school children who enjoy drawing and dream of becoming webtoon artists; family No. 675 has a child with autism who requires hospital treatment expenses; and family No. 676 has a child who wants to continue studying with workbooks and attend Taekwondo academy.

The re-sponsorship target family No. 581 is a single-parent family raising two young children and making a living through part-time work at a restaurant. The sponsorship funds will be used for education, living, and medical expenses for these five families.

At the sponsorship ceremony held on the 20th of this month in the district office meeting room, Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, expressed gratitude to the sponsor, saying, “This will be a great help for students from struggling families to nurture their dreams.”

The ‘100 Families Embrace Project’ is a unique sharing initiative by Seodaemun-gu that allows families who are in urgent need but do not meet legal requirements for public support to receive monthly sponsorships through partnerships with individuals, businesses, and religious organizations.

As the name of the project suggests, it originally started with a goal of supporting 100 families, but due to continued positive response, it has cumulatively supported 676 families with a total funding of over 3.6 billion KRW to date.

In addition to financial support, professional case managers provide welfare services to comprehensively resolve underlying issues in each family and help sponsored families become self-reliant.

All sponsorship funds are transparently transferred directly to the beneficiary families via automatic transfers through the Community Chest of Korea.

If local community centers, welfare agencies, schools, or neighbors recommend struggling neighbors or students, they can become beneficiaries of the ‘100 Families Embrace Project’ after screening.
