[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hanwha Energy has been selected as the final contractor for the Kupehau Solar Project, a 60MW solar power and 240MWh ESS-linked project, in the bid for the construction and operation of a solar power and energy storage system (ESS) power plant hosted by the Hawaii Electric Company (HECO) in the United States.
This is a remarkable achievement following Hanwha Energy's contract signing in December 2018 for the Ho’ohana Solar Project, which involved 52MW of solar power and 208MWh of ESS. Notably, it holds great significance as a domestic company continuously winning solar power and ESS projects in the United States, a powerhouse in the energy new business sector, thereby strengthening its presence locally.
Through this project, a power plant combining 60MW of solar power and 240MWh of ESS will be constructed on Oahu Island, Hawaii, by 2023 and operated for the next 20 years. The 60MW capacity corresponds to the amount of electricity used by approximately 80,000 people. Hanwha Energy will carry out this project through its subsidiary, 174 Power Global, handling all aspects including development, construction, financing, and power plant operation directly.
The Hawaii state government currently aims to transition to 100% renewable energy for electricity by 2045, and Hanwha Energy’s solar and ESS-linked projects are expected to play a significant role in achieving this goal.
Jung In-seop, CEO of Hanwha Energy, said, “It is meaningful that Hanwha Energy contributes to the community by providing clean energy through solar power projects and supplying stable electricity through ESS projects in the U.S. market. We plan to use this as an opportunity to further solidify the position of Korean energy companies in the U.S. and continue achieving business success.”
Meanwhile, Hanwha Energy is actively developing solar power and energy storage system projects in the U.S. through its subsidiary, 174 Power Global. 174 Power Global holds projects exceeding 2GW in power purchase agreements (PPA) and over 10GW in development in the North American solar market, quickly establishing itself as a leader in the industry.
