[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] In Geumsan, Goheung, famous nationwide for onion cultivation, the main planting season began in early October, and now farmers are busy with finishing touches in the fields.
On the 26th, Song Guigeun, the governor of Goheung County, visited the autumn fields where onion planting was nearing completion to listen to the difficulties faced by rural farmers and participated directly in the onion planting work, sharing sweat with the farmers.
Governor Song said, “Despite the difficulties of decreased agricultural product consumption due to COVID-19, I am proud of our farmers preparing for tomorrow, and thanks to your sweat and passion, premium Goheung onions can be produced,” encouraging the onion farming households.
The Goheung area, compared to other regions, has suitable soil and a mild climate ideal for onion growth, producing high-quality onions annually. Especially as a major production area for early-maturing onions, it is highly favored by consumers nationwide and has become one of the key income sources for farmers.
The onions sown this year are expected to overcome the harsh winter through farmers’ warm care and water management and will likely appear on consumers’ tables around May next spring.
In Goheung County, over the past three years, about 700 million won has been invested in irrigation facilities such as sprinklers, establishing a production base for onion cultivation covering 256 hectares, focusing on improving onion quality and increasing production volume.
Additionally, for the purpose of stabilizing vegetable supply and demand, the ‘Goheung County Agricultural Product Price Stabilization Fund’ is being raised to about 5 billion won by next year to prepare for possible onion overproduction and to ensure compensation for farmers’ income reduction.
