[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] On the 26th, Pohang City in Gyeongbuk held a completion ceremony for the market arcade at the special stage of Ocheon Samgwang Market, attended by Mayor Kangdeok Lee, local city and provincial council members, related organizations, heads of autonomous groups, and about 50 merchants.
Ocheon Samgwang Market was selected in 2017 for the traditional market facility modernization project by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. In this regard, Pohang City invested a total project cost of 1.5 billion KRW and started construction in October last year, installing an arcade measuring 96m in length, 1 to 11m in width, with a total floor area of 680㎡.
The newly constructed arcade is a state-of-the-art type that blocks ultraviolet rays while maintaining light transmittance and includes ventilation and air circulation functions. Additionally, Pohang City explained that by installing photoelectric separated detectors, they aimed to prevent risks vulnerable to fire within the traditional market and focused on ensuring customer safety.
Along with the arcade construction, the restrooms were remodeled, and the water supply and drainage systems as well as the flooring were refurbished, creating a brighter and more pleasant atmosphere in the market.
Mayor Kangdeok Lee stated, "I hope that providing a comfortable shopping environment will increase visitors and revitalize the local economy," and pledged, "To secure competitiveness and revitalize the traditional market, we will continuously expand support not only for facilities but also for merchant management."
