Jongno-gu Wins Korea City Award for 7 Consecutive Years

Jongno-gu Wins Korea City Award for 7 Consecutive Years

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) achieved the great feat of receiving the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award at the '2020 Korea Urban Awards' ceremony held on the 26th.

The 'Korea Urban Awards,' hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, is a prestigious award that evaluates and honors basic local governments nationwide based on urban sustainability and the level of living infrastructure.

To this end, experts in each field conducted evaluations in four categories: ▲urban society ▲urban economy ▲urban environment ▲support system, selecting outstanding local governments.

Jongno-gu received excellent evaluations across all categories. Among them, it was highly praised for initiatives such as the 'Donui-dong Saetteul Village Project,' which improved the quality of life for residents in marginalized shantytown areas; operating the 'Hanok Demolition Material Recycling Bank,' which widely promoted the value of Hanok, representing traditional Korean culture, and contributed to the spread of Hanok; and creating the new-concept playground 'Changsin-dong Sanmaru Playground' for local residents and children.

This award is particularly meaningful as Jongno-gu has been the only local government nationwide to receive the award for seven consecutive years since 2014.

Last year, the district received the Presidential Award at the Urban Awards. Despite being located in downtown Seoul, where the floating population is about 50 times the resident population, making it difficult to implement independent policies, Jongno-gu was able to achieve excellent results by preserving our traditional culture and implementing various policies for socially vulnerable groups.

Kim Young-jong, Mayor of Jongno-gu, stated, “I am very pleased and honored to have achieved good results in the Korea Urban Awards evaluation for seven consecutive years,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to create a warm, people-centered community that puts people first, advancing toward a sustainable city where both current and future generations want to live.”
