[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha stated that the issue of Japan's Fukushima contaminated water treatment is a matter taking place within Japan's territory.
Minister Kang appeared at the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee's audit and responded to Rep. Lee Jae-jung's question on whether the Fukushima contaminated water treatment issue is a matter of Japan's sovereign decision by saying, "In principle, yes, but since the decision could affect the safety of our citizens, we believe we have the right to request transparent information."
He added, "We are closely monitoring Japan's contaminated water treatment," and "We are continuously requesting transparent information sharing from Japan and responding mainly through the Office for Government Policy Coordination."
Regarding inquiries about the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' efforts related to the contaminated water treatment issue, he said, "There have been several meetings at the vice minister level recently, but I understand that there have been over ten meetings at the director general level," and emphasized, "I recall that we began seriously addressing the contaminated water treatment issue in August last year, but we accept the criticism as it is and will strive for the national interest."
