The 2nd National Tax Administration Reform Committee Meeting... [Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] The National Tax Administration Reform Committee has urged the National Tax Service to support economic vitality while leading change and innovation in the post-COVID-19 era.


On the 26th, the National Tax Administration Reform Committee held its second meeting of 2020 at the Seoul Regional Tax Office, discussing and advising on major current issues such as future national tax administration operation plans, the operation direction of the Taxpayer Service Redesign Task Force and the 2030 National Tax Administration Future Strategy Task Force, and the status of expanding the disclosure of national tax statistics.


The first meeting was held in March as a written meeting due to the escalation of the COVID-19 crisis alert level.


Chairman Pil-sang Lee emphasized in his greeting, "This year, as our economy faces an unprecedented crisis due to the widespread outbreak of COVID-19 and the difficulties in people's livelihoods are increasing, the National Tax Service must operate the entire national tax administration more meticulously with the mindset of 'sharing the difficulties of the people.'"


He particularly evaluated, "So far, we have made multifaceted proactive administrative efforts, including supporting the supply of hand sanitizers to overcome COVID-19," and urged, "Going forward, we must further strengthen tax support centered on proactive administration to back the recovery of economic vitality."


Furthermore, he requested, "To proactively respond to future changes in the tax environment, we should seek fundamental national tax administration innovation plans leading the post-COVID-19 era, centered on the two joint public-private-academic task forces, and actively discover and provide national tax statistics that can offer practical help to people's lives."


The National Tax Service plans to implement comprehensive tax support to overcome COVID-19 and promote economic leap, and to innovate services for comfortable tax payment, such as building Hometax 2.0. It will also strictly respond to unfair tax evasion and delinquency taking advantage of the national crisis, and expand proactive administration and integrity efforts that meet the public's expectations. Above all, it will thoroughly verify irregular fund movements related to high-priced apartment acquisitions and focus on managing disguised gifts during debt repayment processes.


Meanwhile, at this meeting, due to the transfer of former committee members, Young-sik Kim, Chairman of the Korea Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Tae-hee Woo, Executive Vice President of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ki-yong Hong, Chairman of the Korea Taxpayers Union, and Do-su Hwang, Standing Executive Director of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice, were newly appointed as reform committee members.


Additionally, following the expiration of terms of other members, Jun-ki Kim, Professor at Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Administration, Su-hyuk Lee, CEO of Jinju Mulsan, and Jeong-hee Lee, CEO of Nampyeong IT, were appointed.
