Assemblyman Lee Byung-hoon "Dual Receipt of Training Allowances for National Team Concurrent Coaches"... Even Million-Won Annual Salary Earners Receive 5.3 Million Won Monthly

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] It has been revealed that national team coaches with original affiliated teams receive salaries from their teams while also receiving a training allowance of 5.3 million KRW per month.

According to Lee Byung-hoon, a member of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee (Democratic Party, Gwangju Dong-gu Nam-gu Eul) on the 26th, the Korea Sports Council pays a monthly allowance of 6.3 million KRW to full-time coaches who have labor contracts with sports organizations, and 5.3 million KRW per month to dual-role coaches with original affiliated teams regardless of their salary from their teams.

Considering that most national team dual-role coaches earn annual salaries in the hundreds of millions of KRW at corporate teams or are affiliated with public institutions or local governments, they are receiving excessive benefits.

The total amount paid by the Korea Sports Council to dual-role coaches was 350.7 million KRW to 57 people in June, 289.5 million KRW to 54 people in July, 289.8 million KRW to 54 people in August, and 209.4 million KRW to 40 people in September, totaling over 1 billion KRW. This amount is similar to the one-month training allowance for about 900 national team athletes who applied for non-face-to-face training.

Only two coaches did not receive double payments. They were coaches affiliated with the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation and Daegu Metropolitan City Hall. The reason they did not receive double payments is that their original affiliated teams have regulations that prohibit paying salaries to team coaches while they are active as national team coaches.

Assemblyman Lee Byung-hoon stated, “Some athletes train only two days a month and receive just 65,000 KRW per day, totaling only 130,000 KRW per month, yet coaches receive a fixed 5.3 million KRW plus their team salaries, which is a serious fairness issue,” and argued that the training allowance payment regulations need to be revised.
