[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) has been providing public Wi-Fi services in a section of Anyangcheon starting this month to guarantee residents' basic communication rights and realize informatization welfare.

Anyangcheon is a public recreational space visited by many people for leisure and health promotion. However, there have been occasional complaints about inconvenience due to the relatively limited public Wi-Fi installation areas.

In response, the district planned to install public Wi-Fi along the Anyangcheon section from Sinjeonggyo to Omokgyo Bridge (approximately 800m) under its jurisdiction, and the project was actively promoted after being selected for the Seoul Citizen Participation Budget program.

Using the citizen participation budget, the district first installed eight public Wi-Fi devices in the Anyangcheon section from Sinjeonggyo to Omokgyo Bridge, providing free wireless internet service.

Furthermore, by 2021, the district plans to expand public Wi-Fi installation throughout the entire Anyangcheon section under its jurisdiction (approximately 5 km). As a result, visitors to Anyangcheon will be able to use high-quality free wireless internet service anywhere within the district-managed area.

The newly installed public Wi-Fi devices (APs) comply with the WiFi6 (802.11ax) standard, supporting speeds up to 4.8 Gbps and optimized for high-density multi-user environments. This offers wider coverage and simultaneous connections for more devices compared to existing Wi-Fi, enhancing residents' informatization convenience.

To reduce costs, the district utilized Anyangcheon security light poles to mount the wireless APs and control boxes, and communication and electrical cables were installed underground considering aesthetics and safety.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “In the post-COVID-19 era, as non-face-to-face online activities increase and demand for internet communication networks grows, we installed public Wi-Fi in Anyangcheon to enhance residents' convenience. We will provide the best informatization services to residents by establishing an environment where they can access high-quality communication networks for free anywhere.”
