[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Park Yong-jin, a prominent 'Samsung sniper' in the political sphere and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed on the 25th regarding the passing of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee, "I hope this serves as a new beginning and a new order for Samsung and our economy."
On the same day, Park wrote on his Facebook, "The founders and first- and second-generation leaders who played foundational roles for our economy, including the deceased, are exiting history. The generational shift of chaebols and large corporations leading the Korean economy is coming to an end," he stated.
He evaluated, "There are many merits and demerits," adding, "What is clear is that the corporate culture and economic order shown by early leaders during the authoritarian era have now become outdated."
He continued, "To transform the Korean economy into a land of opportunity, I expect a change in awareness and renewed efforts from third- and fourth-generation business leaders, including Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong," and said, "If they break away from authoritarian management styles and create a new order, the political sphere will support and work together with our companies."
Addressing Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, Park said, "Tax issues are a core order in our society that cannot be compromised," and added, "Our people hope that entrepreneurs pay their taxes properly and bear their responsibilities while maintaining management rights and expanding influence."
He emphasized, "The judicial judgment Lee is currently facing concerns past matters," and stated, "He must not evade responsibility and should confidently accept legal judgment."
Park said, "The company Samsung receives much expectation and love from our people," and expressed hope that "Vice Chairman Lee will be reborn as a businessperson loved by the public through an innovative attitude and compliance management."
