[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Ahead of the November shopping season, it was found that 1 in 5 online shopping customers plan to spend more than 1 million KRW.
eBay Korea conducted a survey on shopping plans targeting 18,984 visitors to Auction ahead of the year’s biggest discount event, ‘Big Smile Day,’ starting November 1.
When asked about the expected spending amount for November’s Big Smile Day, respondents answered as follows: ▲Over 1 million KRW (18%) ▲500,000 to 1 million KRW (23%) ▲300,000 to 500,000 KRW (26%) ▲100,000 to 300,000 KRW (28%) ▲Under 100,000 KRW (5%), with 67% of all respondents planning to spend more than 300,000 KRW.
In the same survey conducted before Big Smile Day in May, 60% said they would spend more than 300,000 KRW, and only 9% planned to spend over 1 million KRW.
Among product categories, in home appliances and digital goods, 1 in 4 people chose wireless vacuum cleaners (25%) as the must-buy item during the discount event. This was followed by wireless earphones (14%), refrigerators (13%), and clothing care devices (12%).
In furniture and interior items, products that enhance the quality of remote work and relaxation were popular. Responses were massage chairs (26%), office chairs (17%), sleep pillows (17%), recliners (13%), lighting furniture (12%), and motion beds (6%).
In the food and daily necessities category, demand for hygiene products and essentials related to COVID-19 was high. Masks (20%) had the highest response rate, followed by toilet paper (18%), probiotics (16%), and instant rice (14%).
In the fashion and accessories category, reflecting the stay-at-home trend and revenge spending, sportswear (38%), luxury bags (15%), sneakers (14%), and padding/fleece (14%) were preferred. For beauty products, basic skincare showed stronger demand than color cosmetics.
When asked to choose just one product they most want to buy during Big Smile Day, the LG Styler was the most selected. Other top items included Samsung Bespoke refrigerators, LG CordZero, Samsung Grande dryers, Gucci bags, Apple iPods, Nintendo Switch, Cuckoo pressure rice cookers, Dyson Airwrap, and Nike sneakers.
Meanwhile, the year’s largest shopping festival, ‘Big Smile Day,’ is scheduled to run from November 1 to 12. It will be held simultaneously on Gmarket, Auction, and G9, offering up to 400,000 KRW discount coupons in three rounds during the period. Members of eBay Korea’s premium membership, ‘Smile Club,’ can enjoy more diverse benefits, and non-members can receive all event-related benefits immediately upon joining.
