Comparison of COVID-19 Deaths per Capita Between the Two Countries at Biden's Florida Rally
"The Next 10 Days Are Crucial for Decades"... Urging Supporters to Vote
[Asia Economy International Department Reporter] Former U.S. President Barack Obama on the 24th (local time) strongly criticized President Donald Trump's response by comparing COVID-19 cases in South Korea and the United States.
On the day exactly ten days before the U.S. presidential election, former President Obama mentioned the death rates per capita in South Korea and the U.S. during a campaign rally supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in Miami, Florida.
He pointed out that the first confirmed cases in South Korea and the U.S. occurred on the same day and compared the deaths per capita in both countries.
Former President Obama said, "South Korea's death rate per capita is only 1.3% of ours," adding, "This is because their government cared about its duties."
He also noted that Canada, a neighboring country of the U.S., has a death rate per capita at 39% of the U.S. level, thanks to government measures to minimize damage.
According to data from the German data company Statista, the COVID-19 death rate per one million people is 679.06 in the U.S., 8.81 in South Korea, and 267.57 in Canada.
According to CNN, former President Obama, seemingly aware of the U.S. recording its highest number of new cases the previous day, said, "After eight months of this pandemic, we are breaking records for new infections," and expressed strong distrust by saying, "Donald Trump will not suddenly try to protect all of us."
He also targeted President Trump’s own COVID-19 infection, saying, "He cannot even take the basic measures to protect himself," and criticized, "If he had acted early, we would never have seen the situation get this bad."
This rally in Florida was former President Obama's second in-person support event for Biden, following one in Pennsylvania on the 21st.
Among the six battleground states that will decide the election, Pennsylvania is the most competitive of the three northern 'Rust Belt' states, while Florida is the most important of the three southern 'Sun Belt' states. The combined electoral votes of these two states are 49, which is 9% of the total 538.
Former President Obama urged his supporters to vote, saying, "What we do in the next 10 days will be important for the coming decades."
He also made an unannounced visit to the office where Biden campaign volunteers were working to express his gratitude and encouraged them by saying, "If you win Florida, this is over."
