NASA Announces "Interesting New Discoveries About the Moon"

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on the 26th (local time) that it will reveal "an interesting new discovery about the Moon." NASA stated that it will disclose the findings confirmed through the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), operated by modifying a Boeing 747, during a virtual conference at noon (1 a.m. KST on the 27th).

NASA plans to explain the scientific achievements with four participants, including SOFIA's lead scientist and the head of manned exploration. NASA only mentioned that this effort "contributes to accumulating knowledge about the Moon to support deep space exploration."

SOFIA flies in the stratosphere at an altitude of 38,000 feet (11 km) and observes the universe in infrared wavelengths invisible to the human eye using a 2.7-meter diameter telescope. To avoid water vapor in the atmosphere that interferes with infrared wavelength observations, it flies above 99% of the atmosphere.
