[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] Kolon Global announced on the 23rd that the 'Quadrilateral Lattice Support Material' using deformed reinforcing bars, developed in collaboration with Steeltec and Donghae Comprehensive Engineering Corporation, has been designated as Construction New Technology No. 903 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The quadrilateral lattice support material is a steel support technology applied to secure tunnel stability in NATM tunnel excavation works.
Steel supports are steel members installed immediately after excavation to minimize loosening of the ground around the tunnel and to suppress excessive initial displacement of the excavation surface.
The new technology jointly developed by the three companies applies 'threaded deformed reinforcing bars' and configures the cross-section in a quadrilateral shape, reducing steel usage by up to 21% compared to existing steel supports and improving bending performance.
With reduced steel usage, costs are cut by up to 23%, and the weight is also decreased, making transportation and installation easier.
With this designation as a new construction technology, Kolon Global can receive benefits such as priority application of the new technology and pre-assessment (PQ) score allocation from the ordering agency.
The quadrilateral lattice support material has been applied since its registration in 2017 in the Korea Expressway Corporation's technology market, including in Section 10 of the Construction Project between Miryang and Ulsan on Expressway No. 14, and Section 2 of the Construction Project between Changnyeong and Miryang on Expressway No. 14.
A Kolon Global official stated, "As tunnel construction is expected to steadily increase due to new installations such as the metropolitan area wide transportation network and expressways, we anticipate that the use of the quadrilateral lattice support material technology will expand significantly."
