[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Amy Coney Barrett, the nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court Justice, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on the 22nd (local time). Once the full Senate vote scheduled for the 26th is completed, the U.S. Supreme Court will enter an era of absolute conservative dominance with 6 conservatives versus 3 progressives.
On that morning, the Senate Judiciary Committee handled Barrett's confirmation with all Democratic members absent and all 12 Republican members present.
Lindsey Graham, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee leading Barrett’s confirmation, said, "(Their absence is) their choice," adding, "We will not let them take control of the committee."
The Democrats placed large photos of people benefiting from 'Obamacare' in the seats of the absent members. This was a warning that if Barrett serves as a Supreme Court Justice, a ruling declaring Obamacare unconstitutional could be issued.
The Senate is scheduled to hold a plenary session on the 26th to vote on Barrett’s confirmation. The Republicans hold 53 out of 100 seats, so despite some defections, the confirmation is expected to pass.
President Donald Trump tweeted that day, "The Senate Judiciary Committee has confirmed Judge Barrett. Now it’s the full Senate vote. A great day for America!" expressing his stance that the Senate confirmation should proceed without delay.
However, it is known that the Democrats have established a countermeasure plan to reform the conservative-leaning Supreme Court by expanding the number of justices if presidential candidate Joe Biden is elected.
