[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 22nd, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin received the 'Outstanding Local Government Head Award' at the '55th National Women's Conference' hosted by the Korean National Council of Women (President Choi Geum-sook) in recognition of his contribution to successfully overcoming COVID-19 and promoting women's rights.
The National Women's Conference, held for the 55th time this year, annually selects and awards local government heads who have made significant contributions to qualitatively improving women's lives and enhancing women's rights and status across local governments nationwide.
This is the second time the Daegu mayor has received the award since 2016 (the 51st conference). Mayor Kwon was highly recognized for his efforts in promoting the 'Daegu-type Women's Hope Job Project,' which created customized jobs suitable and specialized for women amid the spread of the novel coronavirus infection.
So far, Daegu City has actively pursued gender-equality policies from a gender-sensitive perspective, such as expanding the participation rate of female members in relevant committees to over 90% and reflecting the implementation rate of gender awareness and gender equality policies in public institution management evaluation indicators.
Additionally, Daegu was the first nationwide to promote the Women's Safety Campus Project through collaboration among the private sector, government, academia, and research institutes. This project appointed campus safety officers (citizens) and campus safety keepers (university students), conducting activities such as inspecting illegal filming cameras, creating a safe environment for single female households in university dormitory areas, and producing and distributing manuals for responding to digital sex crimes. It was also selected as the recipient of the Prime Minister's Commendation at the 5th Korea Crime Prevention Awards.
Mayor Kwon Young-jin said, "This award is especially meaningful as it recognizes that the citizens of Daegu endured and wisely overcame the hardships caused by COVID-19," adding, "We will create a safer and happier city for women by promoting women's rights, expanding social participation, and establishing a safe environment."
Meanwhile, the Korean National Council of Women, the event's host organization, has been dedicated to improving the status and rights of women in Korea since its founding in 1959. It is a nationwide representative women's organization composed of 61 member organizations, 17 city and provincial women's councils, and 5 million members.
