Jung Eun-kyung "Haven't received flu vaccine yet... Patients with underlying conditions should take their time to get vaccinated"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] There has been a claim that relay-style reporting on deaths related to influenza (flu) vaccines should be avoided as it stirs public anxiety.
On the 22nd, Heo Jong-sik, a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, stated during the comprehensive national audit, "Currently, news of deaths following flu vaccinations is being reported in a relay fashion," adding, "The public is becoming anxious."
Heo said, "Above all, truth and trust are important," and urged, "Since more than 3,000 people can die annually from the flu, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) should more actively explain that vaccination is essential."
On the same day, independent lawmaker Lee Yong-ho questioned KDCA Commissioner Jung Eun-kyung, asking, "If a certain number of deaths occur, would you temporarily halt vaccinations?" and inquired about Commissioner Jung's own flu vaccination status.
When Commissioner Jung replied, "I have not been vaccinated yet as I am not in the target group," Lee said, "I was considering getting vaccinated yesterday, but after hearing the news of deaths, I am anxious and watching the situation."
Commissioner Jung responded, "I apologize for the delay in vaccinations due to vaccine distribution issues," and urged, "Those with underlying conditions should wait longer than usual and get vaccinated when they are in good health."
Since the 19th, a free flu vaccination program for seniors aged 70 and above has started, but concerns about vaccine shortages have led to a surge in early vaccinations, increasing worries about adverse reactions.
Commissioner Jung reiterated, "It is safest to receive the flu vaccine when you are in the best health," adding, "After vaccination, rest and monitor your health condition."
