[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 22nd that it will additionally promote the improvement of brightness at intersections with frequent traffic accidents to prevent nighttime traffic accidents and ensure pedestrian safety.
Gwangju City plans to install high-efficiency LED floodlights on existing traffic surveillance camera poles without adding structures that would spoil the urban landscape, thereby improving intersection brightness and saving 32 million KRW in structure installation costs.
Earlier this year, the city confirmed the effect of improved brightness around intersections by installing LED floodlights at nine locations, including Bonchon Industrial Complex Intersection.
By December, the city plans to improve the brightness at 11 intersections, including Gwangcheon Intersection in Seo-gu, Gakhwa Intersection in Buk-gu, and Yeonggwangtong Intersection in Gwangsan-gu, and replace old metal fixtures with LED floodlights at two locations, including the entrance intersection of Singaji District in Gwangsan-gu.
Im Nam-jin, head of the city's Road Division, said, “We expect that the intersection brightness improvement project will help reduce traffic accidents by ensuring the safety of nighttime pedestrians,” adding, “We plan to install additional units next year as well.”
