[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Hyundai Department Store Group received a presidential citation in recognition of its 10 years of scholarship support for children of police officers who were injured or died in the line of duty.

Hyundai Department Store Group announced on the 22nd that it won the "Presidential Citation in the category of support for police officers who died or were injured in the line of duty" at the "75th Police Day" government awards. The presidential citation was personally presented by Police Commissioner Kim Chang-ryong to Jang Hojin, President of Hyundai Department Store’s Planning and Coordination Headquarters, at the Police Agency in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on the same day.

The "Police Day" government awards are given annually to individuals or organizations who have contributed to the development of police administration to strengthen social safety or who have contributed to the interests and development of the nation and society.

Hyundai Department Store Group’s receipt of the presidential citation this time was in recognition of its operation of the "Parangsae Scholarship" program, which has provided scholarships for 10 years since 2011 to children of police officers who died or were injured in the line of duty (preschool children, elementary, middle, and high school students, and university students) recommended by the Police Agency. Regarding this, a Police Agency official said, "Among domestic companies, Hyundai Department Store Group was the first to provide scholarships for children of police officers who died in the line of duty in 2011, and this year, it also delivered 400 million KRW in scholarships to about 270 children of police officers who died or were injured in the line of duty."

Including this year’s Parangsae Scholarship delivered on the 22nd, Hyundai Department Store Group will provide a total of 2.46 billion KRW in scholarships over 10 years to 1,385 children of police officers who died or were injured in the line of duty.

Jang Hojin, President of Hyundai Department Store, said, "I feel very honored to commemorate the noble spirit of the ‘uniformed public officials’ who sacrificed for the safety of the nation and its people," and added, "I hope our small sincerity will help instill pride and self-esteem in the bereaved families even a little."

In addition to scholarship support for children of police officers who died or were injured in the line of duty, Hyundai Department Store Group has been carrying out a support project for families of firefighters who died in the line of duty since 2008 to honor the spirit of sacrifice of ‘uniformed public officials.’ Until last year, it supported 497 people with a total of 1.5 billion KRW in scholarships and living expenses, and plans to deliver scholarships again this year once the selection of recipients is completed.
