[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Kim Jong-in, Emergency Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, urged on the 22nd, regarding the deaths of 11 people nationwide after receiving flu vaccines, “The health authorities should conduct a full investigation of the flu vaccines and take measures so that the public can receive vaccinations with confidence.”
At the Emergency Committee meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Chairman Kim said, “It seems that people who want to get the flu vaccine are hesitating, and people are feeling very anxious,” adding, “The health authorities have provided no explanation about what processes the flu vaccine went through during production and what problems occurred during distribution that caused this situation.”
Regarding the death of the younger brother of elementary school siblings in Incheon who suffered severe burns while their guardian was away from home, Chairman Kim stated, “The entire nation is heartbroken, and I pray for the deceased’s soul.”
Concerning the Audit Board’s results on the early shutdown of Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, Chairman Kim said, “It can be confirmed that the shutdown was carried out artificially under the pretext of nuclear phase-out without much consideration of economic feasibility,” and pointed out, “It is said that the whole world is now welcoming a renaissance of nuclear power. I think South Korea is one of the few countries that followed Germany’s nuclear phase-out policy implemented in 2011.”
Chairman Kim added, “The result of Germany’s nuclear phase-out was the highest electricity prices in the world and the construction of many coal power plants, which caused other environmental problems,” and stated, “Although there is no official statement from the German government, the conclusion is that the nuclear phase-out was a failure as an energy policy.”
Chairman Kim said, “We are still a country that has never experienced an accident caused by nuclear power generation. It seems the government is taking a very ambiguous stance on whether to pursue nuclear phase-out and what direction to take energy policy in the future,” and asked, “Isn’t it right for the government to reconsider nuclear power generation?”
