[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) is taking steps to bridge the digital divide.

The district announced that it will run the digital adult literacy program "Smart Smartphone Life!" for 10 elderly residents in the area until the 4th of next month.

"Smart Smartphone Life!" is a program designed to teach essential basic smartphone functions to elderly people who are digitally vulnerable. It is held every Wednesday from 4:00 PM to 5:50 PM at the Jungnang-gu Lifelong Learning Center located in Mangwoo-dong.

The program consists of four courses: ▲Understanding Smartphones ▲Internet Searching ▲Using YouTube ▲Learning Key Features of KakaoTalk, and is conducted mainly through hands-on practice to help the elderly better understand. In particular, one assistant instructor is assigned in addition to the main instructor to provide personalized guidance.

Moreover, to ensure the safety of elderly participants vulnerable to COVID-19, the class size has been reduced to a minimum, seats are spaced one apart, and hand sanitizers are provided in the classroom, strictly following social distancing measures to carefully protect the safety of the elderly.

Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "I hope this education will greatly help strengthen the digital capabilities of the elderly." He added, "We will continue to prepare various programs for digitally marginalized groups so that all residents can enjoy digital culture."

The district also announced that an advanced class of the digital adult literacy program will be operated starting November 11, receiving great response from residents.

The advanced course will accept applications on a first-come, first-served basis by phone starting at 10:00 AM on November 2.
