SK Construction Develops Communication Platform for Real-Time Construction Site Safety Management

SK Construction Develops Communication Platform for Real-Time Construction Site Safety Management

[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] SK Engineering & Construction is partnering with a global communication platform development company to explore new business models, including construction site safety management systems.

On the 21st, SK Engineering & Construction announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Veea, a U.S.-based communication platform development company, for joint technology development and operation of the Smart Safety Platform, a construction site safety management system. The Smart Safety Platform is a comprehensive safety management system that provides real-time risk information collected and analyzed from industrial accident big data to on-site workers and managers via mobile devices.

Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the signing ceremony was held without a separate event, with SK Engineering & Construction President Jaehyun Ahn and Veea CEO Allen Salmasi signing the agreement remotely via an online video system.

Veea's intelligent edge computing platform technology is a data distributed processing technology that complements the drawbacks of cloud technology, which processes all data on a central server. It is recognized as one of the essential technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including autonomous driving, smart factories, and virtual reality (VR).

Construction sites, due to their special environments such as underground spaces, have difficulty establishing wireless internet, and wired internet installation is also challenging until the construction process reaches a certain stage, making real-time use of safety information data difficult. However, SK Engineering & Construction plans to implement a network system that enables smooth provision of safety information even at special construction sites through this agreement. Additionally, the company aims to proactively accumulate experience and know-how in platform service business to expand the application of the Smart Safety Platform in overseas projects in the future.

Jaehyun Ahn, President of SK Engineering & Construction, said, "We expect to create a differentiated platform service that can improve safety at construction sites together with Veea, a global communication platform company," adding, "We will continue to strive to realize safety management and create social value through the development of useful platform services."
