[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The competition rate for the first trial attendance ticket lottery in the case of Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong's Samsung Electronics management succession allegations recorded 1.87 to 1.
The Seoul Central District Court announced that 73 people applied for attendance tickets for Lee's trial preparation session on the 22nd, held from 1:30 PM to 3 PM on the 21st. Considering that 39 seats are allocated to the general public (22 seats in the main courtroom and 17 seats in the relay courtroom), the competition rate did not even reach 2 to 1. This is a significant decrease compared to the 15 to 1 competition rate during Lee's 'state affairs manipulation' trial verdict in 2017.
Earlier, the court stated, "To provide equal opportunities for the public to attend trials on cases of high social interest, attendance tickets will be distributed by lottery." To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the court decided to operate a separate relay courtroom in addition to the main courtroom where the trial is held. Winners will be notified individually. Those selected can receive their attendance tickets at the West Building entrance from 1:30 PM on the trial day, the 22nd.
