On the 21st, according to the legal community, Judge An Jwajin of the Changwon District Court Criminal Division 4 sentenced A (41), who was tried for special theft, to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year suspension. The court stated, "The defendant is a former police officer who recently resigned and has tarnished the honor of the police," but also noted, "Considering that the crime was committed for child support and living expenses, and that most of the damages have been compensated."
A was charged with stealing a bag containing 37 million won in settlement money from the owner of a famous lottery sales shop in the Changwon area on August 22 of this year. The former police officer had worked as a sergeant at a police station in Changwon but resigned earlier this year. It is known that he committed the crime due to increasing gambling debts and severe family conflicts.
