[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Ki-dong] The study by Jeon Geun-cheol, head of the Orthopedics Department at Mokpo Hanguk Hospital, titled "Immunohistochemical Analysis of Mechanoreceptors in the Residual Posterior Cruciate Ligament and Allogeneic Achilles Tendon Graft in Residual Preservation Technique of Posterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction," has attracted attention as the first author publication in the October 2020 issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM), the world's most prestigious SCI-level journal related to orthopedics and sports medicine.

When performing posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction surgery, there are techniques that preserve the remaining residual PCL and techniques that remove it entirely. Patients undergoing the preservation technique are believed to benefit from the mechanoreceptors remaining in the residual PCL, which help maintain proprioception and promote faster recovery.

Therefore, in PCL reconstruction using an allogeneic Achilles tendon graft, the residual PCL preservation technique leaves both the graft and the residual PCL intact.

The research team’s paper is the first to reveal through immunohistochemical staining analysis of specimens from the residual PCL and the implanted allogeneic Achilles tendon graft that mechanoreceptors are absent in the allogeneic Achilles tendon graft but remain in the residual PCL.

The significance of this paper lies in the fact that the residual PCL preservation technique aids in maintaining proprioception, allowing patients to retain their original proprioceptive motor sensation, which greatly facilitates their return to daily life and pre-injury sports activities.

Under the guidance of Director Ko Gwang-il, Head Jeon Geun-cheol is responsible for sports and degenerative arthritis treatment in the joint field at the Orthopedics Department of Mokpo Hanguk Hospital.
