[2020 National Audit] Lee Jae-myung "Current Government Housing Policy Is Correct... Must Be Implemented Without Any Loopholes"

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, evaluated that the current real estate policy direction of the Moon Jae-in administration is on the right track. He also expressed support for the demolition work of the Four Major Rivers dams. Furthermore, he assessed that the quality of life for individuals has improved since the launch of the Moon Jae-in administration.

On the 20th, during the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee’s audit of Gyeonggi Province, Lee responded to a question from Song Seok-jun, a member of the People Power Party, regarding the current government's housing policy by saying, "I believe the direction of the housing policy is correct," and advised, "It is necessary to strengthen and solidify the policy when implementing it."

He added, "The core of the housing policy is to prevent making money from real estate anymore," and expressed his usual conviction by stating, "Taxes should be reduced so as not to impose excessive burdens on actual demanders, and strict standards should be applied to speculation or investors to make unearned income impossible, with taxation or financial sanctions."

However, Lee said, "The policy should be properly implemented, but problems arise because there are many loopholes during the implementation process," and added, "The current policy is not a failure; the basic direction is correct. It just needs to be meticulous, perfect, and strong without any gaps."

Regarding the issue of demolishing dams such as those on the Four Major Rivers, he said, "There are Four Major Rivers dams in Gyeonggi Province as well, and basically, I believe they should be demolished and restored to their natural state," but added, "However, it may vary somewhat depending on the situation of each region."

On the improvement of quality of life since the Moon Jae-in administration took office, he responded, "I believe improvements have been made in many areas."

In addition, regarding the government announcement related to the incident of a Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries employee defecting to North Korea, Lee emphasized that, assuming he has no individual information, the government’s announcements should be accepted.
