Court Sentences Man in His 50s to 2 Years in Prison for Trying to Set Fire at Home After Dispute with Parents

[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] A man in his 50s who was charged with attempting to set fire to his home after arguing with his parents was sentenced to prison.

According to the legal community on the 20th, the Daegu District Court Criminal Division 12 (Chief Judge Jin-gwan Lee) sentenced A (52) to two years in prison on charges including attempted arson of an occupied building. The court stated, "The defendant confessed to most of the crimes, and although the actual damage caused by the arson was not significant, it appears that the victims suffered great mental distress." It added, "Considering that the defendant shows little voluntary will to resolve his alcohol addiction problem, there is a high risk of repeated offenses."

A was prosecuted for attempting to set fire to his home with a disposable lighter on May 7 last year after asking his mother (81) for alcohol and being refused, which led to an argument. The fire was immediately extinguished by A's mother, preventing a larger fire. In July of the same year, A also threatened his family with a disposable gas canister during an argument over alcohol and assaulted his father (82), who tried to intervene, causing injuries.
