Claiming 'Luxury City' Optimal through Establishment of Changwon Medical College and Development of Logistics Industrial Complex

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] The Bukmyeon New Town Development Promotion Committee in Changwon, Gyeongnam, held a press conference at the Changwon City Hall Press Center on the 19th, urging Changwon City to proceed with the ‘Bukmyeon New Town Development’ and the ‘Establishment of Changwon Medical University.’
Bukmyeon is an administrative district belonging to Uichang-gu, Changwon, currently promoting population inflow through the revitalization of the Dongjeon General Industrial Complex. However, due to long-term delays in development caused by private ownership such as greenbelt restrictions, it is considered one of the most underdeveloped areas, leading to increasing calls for accelerated development.
At the press conference, the promotion committee stated, “For 20 years, the development process has excluded and marginalized the area due to private ownership such as greenbelt restrictions,” and “We strongly urge the political circles and Changwon City to show a progressive will and cooperation for the development of Bukmyeon New Town.”
According to the promotion committee, Bukmyeon’s population decreases by about 10,000 to 20,000 people annually due to changes in the industrial structure. Although it accounts for one-tenth of the total area of the ‘Unified Changwon City’ at 736㎢, its population is only about 42,000, which is one twenty-fifth of the city’s total population.
The promotion committee argued, “Changwon City, with a population of 1 million, must urgently expand residential infrastructure and promote the creation of an education-specialized complex by developing the idle land in Bukmyeon, where development has been restricted.” They emphasized that the establishment of ‘Changwon Medical University’ is essential for the creation of the education-specialized complex.
They added, “The development of a convergence luxury new town combining education, residential, and medical facilities is the only measure to prevent population outflow from Changwon City and improve residents’ quality of life,” and “Utilizing the highly accessible Bukmyeon IC to create an agricultural product distribution complex and logistics industrial complex is the optimal solution to alleviate the congestion of Changwon’s transportation and industrial complexes.”
