Bucheon Philharmonic 'Tchaikovsky, Pathetique' Concert... Kagel 'Ein Brief' Domestic Premiere

[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra will perform its 265th regular concert, "Tchaikovsky, Pathetique," at 5 p.m. on the 24th at the Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul.

Jin Seo, who in 2007 became the first Korean to win the Contemporary Music Award at the 4th Lovro von Mata?i? International Conducting Competition in Croatia, will serve as guest conductor, with mezzo-soprano Choo Heemyung and cellist Lee Jeongran as soloists.

At this regular concert, the Bucheon Philharmonic will perform Mauricio Kagel's "Ein Brief," Saint-Sa?ns' Cello Concerto No. 1, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique."

Kagel is a master of contemporary music who emerged in the 1950s with avant-garde, groundbreaking music and continued to produce numerous challenging works into the 2000s. "Ein Brief," performed this time, is a piece that the Bucheon Philharmonic is premiering in Korea. Vocalist Choo Heemyung, who has performed dozens of concerts in the United States, will collaborate.

In Saint-Sa?ns' Cello Concerto No. 1, cellist Lee Jeongran of Ensemble Triojade will perform as soloist. Lee recently released a new album titled "Rendezvous in Paris" and is actively performing. Saint-Sa?ns' Cello Concerto No. 1 is a passionate tribute to the cello, featuring a tension akin to tightrope walking and lyrical melodies that leave a strong impression.

Tchaikovsky premiered the "Pathetique" as a conductor in 1893 and passed away just nine days later. Because of this, the "Pathetique" is known as Tchaikovsky's autobiographical requiem. However, the title "Pathetique" is a mistranslation of the French word meaning "solemn" or "emotional," so it is problematic to define this work solely as a funeral march heading toward death. Through this piece, Tchaikovsky can be seen as providing an overview of human life, and it allows for interpretations from various perspectives.
