Brother of Murdered Official Lee Rae-jin Attends National Audit Hearing
"Only Pretending to Search After My Brother's Death"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Lee Rae-jin, the brother of Mr. Lee, a Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries official who was shot dead by North Korean soldiers in the northern waters of Soyeonpyeongdo in the West Sea, attended the "National Audit Hearing to Hear the Truth about the West Sea Shooting Incident (National Audit)" hosted by the People Power Party in the National Assembly and raised the possibility that his brother slipped.
During the Q&A session, Mr. Lee said, "My brother was the team leader of the high-speed boat," and added, "There is a high possibility that he slipped while working on top of it."
He criticized the government's judgment of defection to the North, saying, "My brother is officially classified as missing, and the state should treat him accordingly." He also said, "(The government) is only pretending to search after my brother died," and urged, "Do not dishonor my brother's sacrifice."
In response, People Power Party lawmaker Shin Won-sik emphasized, "There is a 99.99% chance that he slipped," and added, "A scientific analysis of the tidal currents can be conducted."
Initially, the People Power Party sought to summon Mr. Lee and others as witnesses for the audit, but the plan was scrapped due to opposition from the Democratic Party of Korea, leading to the holding of a meeting under the name of the National Audit.
